A 24-year-old man was fatally shot near the Coney Island boardwalk in broad daylight, prompting a homicide investigation by the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The shooting occurred on the morning of Wednesday, July 1, 2026, just blocks from the popular beachfront destination, leaving residents and visitors shaken as detectives worked to identify the gunman and determine a motive According to the NYPD, officers responded at approximately 9:23 a.m. to a 911 call reporting a shooting near West 28th Street and Surf Avenue in Coney Island. When officers arrived, they found Truron Roach-Martin, 24, suffering from gunshot wounds to the face and chest. Emergency medical personnel transported him to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts.

Police said the suspect fled eastbound on West 28th Street toward Mermaid Avenue immediately after the shooting. Investigators described the shooter as a Black male wearing a blue mask. As of the latest update, no arrests have been announced, and detectives continue reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and collecting forensic evidence in an effort to identify the suspect. Authorities have not released a motive for the killing.

Roach-Martin was known in Brooklyn’s music scene by his stage name “Briscoe Bands.” The aspiring drill rapper had recently signed with Rich Blocc Records and was gaining recognition through his music releases and growing social media presence. According to family members, he was also the father of a three-year-old daughter. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief from friends, fellow musicians, and supporters who remembered him as a talented young artist whose career was beginning to gain momentum.

Speaking to local media, Roach-Martin’s mother described her son as a loving father who was devoted to his family. She said she believes jealousy over his emerging music career may have played a role in the fatal shooting, although police have not confirmed any possible motive. She urged investigators to bring the person responsible to justice, expressing confidence that the case will ultimately be solved.

Residents in the neighborhood reported hearing several gunshots before realizing the sounds were not fireworks. One nearby resident said the timing initially caused confusion because of the holiday week, but the heavy police presence quickly made it clear that a serious crime had occurred. Detectives spent hours processing the scene, placing evidence markers throughout the area and canvassing nearby businesses for surveillance video.

The homicide has renewed concerns about gun violence in parts of Brooklyn during the busy summer season, when thousands of people visit Coney Island’s beaches, amusement parks, and boardwalk. While the shooting occurred near one of New York City’s most visited waterfront destinations, police emphasized that the investigation remains active and asked anyone with information, photographs, or video footage to contact the NYPD or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.

As investigators continue searching for the gunman, family members, friends, and members of Brooklyn’s music community are mourning the loss of Truron Roach-Martin. Authorities have pledged to pursue all available leads as they work to determine what led to the fatal shooting and to bring those responsible to justice.
