Long Island Bus Crash Today: Two Dead, Multiple Injured After Bus Overturns on Long Island Expressway in Queens

Two people were killed and numerous others were injured after a devastating coach bus crash on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) in Queens late Monday night, prompting a massive emergency response and hours-long highway closures as investigators worked to determine what caused the deadly collision. Authorities confirmed that the crash involved a coach bus and several passenger vehicles, creating a chaotic scene near Exit 16 at Greenpoint Avenue in Maspeth.

According to the New York City Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. when the westbound coach bus collided with two vehicles. Following the initial impact, the bus struck the center median, overturned, and crossed into the eastbound lanes of the expressway, where it crashed into two additional vehicles. The force of the collision left the bus lying on its side and caused extensive damage to multiple cars involved in the chain-reaction crash.

Officials said the bus driver and one passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been publicly released pending notification of their families. The drivers of the passenger vehicles involved also received medical attention, with at least one reported to be in critical condition.

The severity of the crash prompted an extensive emergency response involving more than 70 firefighters, EMS personnel, police officers, and rescue crews. First responders worked through the night to extricate victims, stabilize the injured, and secure the crash scene. Emergency personnel also managed significant fuel spills and debris scattered across both directions of the expressway while ensuring the safety of motorists trapped in the resulting traffic backup.

The collision forced the closure of both eastbound and westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway for several hours, leading to major traffic delays during the overnight period and into Tuesday morning’s commute. Some stranded motorists were instructed to reverse their vehicles and exit the expressway through entrance ramps as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigators documented the scene. Although the roadway has since reopened, residual delays persisted while repairs to damaged infrastructure were completed.

The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is leading the investigation. Detectives are examining the damaged vehicles, reviewing surveillance footage from nearby traffic cameras, and interviewing witnesses to establish exactly what caused the bus to lose control before crossing the median. Officials have not announced whether speed, mechanical failure, driver impairment, or another factor contributed to the deadly crash, emphasizing that the investigation remains active.
