The communities of Mobile and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, are mourning the heartbreaking loss of James Walter Hensley II, 19, and Mark McNeil  Mostellar, 21, who tragically lost their lives in a devastating house fire in Conecuh County during the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 1. The tragedy has left their families, friends, classmates, and the University of Alabama community grieving the loss of two young men remembered for their kindness, character, and bright futures.

According to the Conecuh County Coroner’s Office, the fire was reported at approximately 1:30 a.m. at a residence located off Stowers Timberland Road near Evergreen. Emergency crews, including firefighters, law enforcement officers, and medical personnel, responded quickly to the scene after receiving reports of a residential structure fire. Four individuals were inside the home when the blaze erupted. While two occupants managed to escape and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries, Hensley and Mostellar were unable to escape and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have confirmed that the cause and origin of the fire remain under active investigation. The Conecuh County Coroner’s Office is working alongside the Evergreen Police Department and the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office to determine what led to the deadly blaze. Investigators have not yet released additional details regarding how the fire started or whether any contributing factors have been identified. Officials have indicated that more information will be made available as the investigation progresses.

The victims were later identified as James Walter Hensley II and Mark McNeil Mostellar, both of Mobile. The two young men were students at the University of Alabama, where they were pursuing their education while building promising futures. News of their deaths spread rapidly throughout the university community, prompting an outpouring of condolences from classmates, faculty members, alumni, and friends.

James Hensley II was a graduate of St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile. Following confirmation of his death, the school announced a community prayer and memorial gathering, inviting students, alumni, faculty, and local residents to come together in remembrance. In a message shared by the school, administrators reflected on the fragility of life and encouraged members of the community to support one another through prayer, compassion, and fellowship during this difficult time.

Mark Mostellar was a graduate of UMS-Wright Preparatory School, where he was also remembered fondly by former classmates, teachers, and friends. Tributes shared across social media described him as a thoughtful, dependable, and compassionate young man whose positive attitude and genuine friendship touched many lives. Likewise, those who knew James remembered his warm personality, generous spirit, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. Together, the two friends leave behind memories that will continue to inspire everyone fortunate enough to have known them.

As family members prepare to lay the young men to rest, the focus remains on celebrating their lives and honoring the impact they made during their time with family, friends, and classmates. Although their lives ended far too soon, James Hensley II and Mark Mostellar will be remembered for their compassion, friendships, academic pursuits, and the promise they carried into the future.
