The Chesterfield County Police Department has announced a significant milestone in the recovery of Officers Jacob Clark and Jacob Wells, both of whom have been discharged from the hospital and are continuing to recover at home following a violent line-of-duty shooting that occurred on May 31, 2026, in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The update has been welcomed by colleagues, family members, and residents across the community who have supported the officers throughout their lengthy hospitalization.

The incident unfolded around 4:40 p.m. on May 31 when officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 12900 block of Gumfork Place. According to investigators, a woman called 911 reporting that her 65-year-old son, Gary G. Shaw, had fired multiple shots inside the home during a domestic dispute. She told dispatchers she had barricaded herself inside an upstairs bedroom while Shaw attempted to force his way inside.

When Officers Clark and Wells entered the residence to protect the victim and secure the scene, police say Shaw opened fire with both a handgun and a long gun. Both officers were struck by multiple rounds during the exchange of gunfire. Police K-9 Knight, who accompanied officers into the home, was also shot and later died from injuries sustained in the attack. Officers returned fire, wounding Shaw before he was taken into custody.

Authorities later identified the wounded officers as 25-year-old Jacob Clark, a five-year veteran of the Chesterfield County Police Department, and 40-year-old Jacob Wells, a nearly ten-year veteran. Both officers serve in the Swift Creek Patrol Division, and both come from law enforcement families, with each having a parent who previously served with the department.

The injuries suffered by the officers were severe. Community fundraising efforts revealed that Clark sustained seven gunshot wounds, underwent multiple surgeries, and required more than 70 units of blood during lifesaving treatment. Wells was struck twice, suffering a serious wound to his right arm along with another gunshot injury. Both officers remained hospitalized for several weeks as doctors monitored their recovery and provided intensive rehabilitation.

On July 2, Chesterfield County Police Chief Col. Frank Carpenter announced that both officers had been released from the hospital and are now recovering with their families at home. While describing the development as an important milestone, Carpenter emphasized that their rehabilitation is far from over.

There will be challenges ahead, and they will continue to need our support,” Carpenter said. “I ask that you keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers as they continue the road to healing.

The community has rallied behind the officers since the shooting through blood drives, fundraising campaigns, charitable events, and public tributes honoring both the injured officers and fallen K-9 Knight. Local businesses and organizations have also organized benefit events to assist the families as they face months of continued recovery and rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, Gary G. Shaw remains charged with numerous felony offenses, including two counts of attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated malicious wounding, and charges related to the death of K-9 Knight. His case is scheduled to proceed in court later this summer as the criminal investigation continues.
