Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a two-alarm apartment fire that prompted a large emergency response in New Orleans, where firefighters rescued a woman trapped inside a burning building and safely evacuated multiple residents. The blaze, which occurred on Thursday, July 2, 2026, displaced several people and temporarily disrupted utility service in the surrounding neighborhood.

According to the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD), the fire was reported at approximately 5:09 p.m. at a four-unit apartment building in the 3800 block of Texas Drive. Fire crews were dispatched immediately, and the first responding company arrived on scene at 5:16 p.m., where firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the apartment units. Due to the intensity of the fire and the potential threat to occupants, incident commanders requested a second alarm just one minute later to bring additional personnel and equipment to the scene.)

As firefighters entered the building, they learned that one resident remained trapped on the second floor. Crews quickly deployed ladders and successfully rescued the woman through a second-story window while other firefighters advanced hose lines into the structure to attack the fire. Officials confirmed that all remaining residents were able to evacuate safely before conditions inside the building worsened. The fire was brought under control by approximately 5:40 p.m., preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.

In total, 16 fire units and 44 firefighters responded to the incident. Emergency personnel remained at the scene after the fire was extinguished to search for hidden hot spots, ventilate the structure, and ensure the building was safe. Despite the significant damage to the affected apartment, no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported, a positive outcome that officials credited to the rapid response of emergency crews and the successful rescue operation.

The blaze displaced seven residents, who are receiving temporary assistance from the American Red Cross. In addition, three neighboring apartment buildings temporarily lost electrical service while Entergy crews worked to isolate the damaged electrical infrastructure and restore power safely. Fire officials coordinated with utility workers to ensure the area remained secure during the recovery effort.

Investigators with the New Orleans Fire Department have launched an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire. Preliminary information indicates that the blaze began in a bedroom, but officials have not yet determined what ignited the fire or whether any accidental or electrical factors were involved. Fire investigators are examining the scene, documenting evidence, and interviewing residents as part of the ongoing investigation.

The incident highlights the importance of working smoke alarms, emergency evacuation plans, and prompt notification of emergency services. Fire officials continue to encourage residents to regularly test smoke detectors, identify multiple escape routes from their homes, and immediately call 911 if smoke or flames are detected.

As cleanup efforts continue, the New Orleans Fire Department expressed appreciation for the coordinated efforts of firefighters, emergency medical personnel, utility crews, and relief organizations that assisted displaced residents. Authorities are expected to release additional information once the investigation into the cause of the fire has been completed.
