A Fourth of July celebration in Avondale Estates was briefly disrupted Saturday night after reports of suspected gunfire prompted a large law enforcement response and the evacuation of attendees from Napoleon B. Cobb Stadium, where the city’s annual fireworks display was underway. Authorities confirmed that one person was detained in connection with the incident, and an investigation remains ongoing.

According to a statement released by the City of Avondale Estates, the incident occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. during the community’s Independence Day fireworks celebration. Officers from the Avondale Estates Police Department, DeKalb County School District Police, and on-site event security quickly responded after receiving reports of what officials described as suspected celebratory gunfire in the area.

Out of an abundance of caution, authorities immediately began escorting spectators out of the stadium while officers secured the venue and searched for the source of the reported gunfire. Witnesses described a tense but orderly evacuation as families, many of whom had gathered to celebrate the holiday, exited the stadium under the direction of police and event staff. Videos shared on social media showed a heavy police presence, emergency vehicles, and people leaving the area while helicopters circled overhead.

City officials emphasized that there were no reported injuries and no additional incidents during or after the evacuation. They also noted that security measures had already been in place for the event, including mandatory bag checks and weapons screenings for all guests entering the stadium. Those precautions, officials said, helped ensure a swift and organized response when the reports of gunfire were received.

Following the incident, police detained one suspect. Authorities have not released the individual’s identity, age, or any potential charges. Investigators have also not disclosed whether the gunfire originated from inside the stadium or from a nearby location outside the event grounds. The city stated only that the investigation remains active and that additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The annual Avondale Estates Independence Day celebration attracts hundreds of residents and visitors each year. Held at Napoleon B. Cobb Stadium, the event typically features live entertainment, family activities, food vendors, and a fireworks display following the city’s traditional Fourth of July parade. This year’s festivities were interrupted just minutes before the celebration concluded, leaving many attendees shaken but grateful that no one was hurt.

Officials thanked attendees for remaining calm and cooperating with emergency personnel throughout the evacuation. In a public statement, the city expressed appreciation for the rapid response by local police, school district officers, and event security, whose coordinated efforts helped prevent panic and ensured everyone exited the venue safely.

As detectives continue reviewing witness statements, surveillance footage, and other evidence, authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Avondale Estates Police Department. At this time, investigators have not confirmed whether the reported shots were intentionally fired toward the crowd or constituted celebratory gunfire, and they continue to caution the public against speculation while the investigation is ongoing.
