A 36-year-old Owatonna man is in custody after allegedly opening fire on police officers during a traffic stop Wednesday night, prompting a lengthy standoff, a shelter-in-place order, and a large law enforcement response in southern Minnesota. Authorities confirmed that no officers or members of the public were injured during the incident, which remains under investigation.

According to the Owatonna Police Department, officers were initially responding to reports of a person experiencing a mental health crisis at approximately 8:20 p.m. on July 1. The individual was later located inside a vehicle near West Bridge Street. Officers conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of South Oak Avenue and Southview Street in an effort to safely engage with the driver.

Police said officers observed that the 36-year-old man had cuts on his forearm, indicating he may have been in distress. As officers attempted to communicate with him, the situation escalated rapidly. Investigators say the driver became uncooperative, reached for a firearm, and began firing multiple rounds at the officers. No officers were struck during the exchange of gunfire.

After the shooting, the suspect fled in his vehicle before stopping several blocks away in the 200 block of West McKinley Street. Law enforcement quickly established a perimeter around the neighborhood, bringing in assistance from the Steele County Sheriff’s Office, Rice County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota State Patrol, and regional SWAT teams. Residents in the surrounding area were instructed to shelter in place while negotiators and tactical officers worked to resolve the dangerous situation.

The standoff lasted for more than two hours. Authorities said that at approximately 12:20 a.m. Thursday, the suspect shot himself. Officers immediately moved in once it was safe to do so, taking him into custody without further incident. He was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Officials have not publicly released details regarding the extent of his injuries or his current medical condition

Following the suspect’s arrest, the shelter-in-place order was lifted, allowing residents to return to their normal activities. Police emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the public after the suspect had been secured. The department also thanked neighboring agencies for their assistance during the incident, noting that the coordinated response helped bring the situation to a safe conclusion.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the events leading up to the traffic stop and the exchange of gunfire. Authorities have not yet announced the specific criminal charges the suspect may face, though the investigation remains active. Officials are also reviewing evidence from the scene, including officer statements and any available body camera or surveillance footage.

The incident has drawn attention throughout the Owatonna community, highlighting the challenges officers can face when responding to calls involving individuals believed to be experiencing mental health crises. While no law enforcement personnel were injured, the case serves as a reminder of the unpredictable dangers officers encounter during routine traffic stops and welfare checks.
