A tragic two-vehicle collision near Cressy in Victoria’s southwest has claimed the lives of two people, leaving their families and local communities in mourning while investigators work to determine the cause of the devastating crash. The fatal incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 1, on Colac-Ballarat Road at the intersection with Barpinba Road in Weering, approximately 30 kilometers north of Colac.

According to Victoria Police, emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 5:15 p.m. following reports that two vehicles had collided. Police, Ambulance Victoria paramedics, Country Fire Authority (CFA) crews, and other emergency personnel responded quickly, but despite their efforts, both drivers suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the victims were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles. One victim was a 57-year-old man from Redan, a suburb of Ballarat, while the other was a 70-year-old woman from Beeac, a small rural community near Colac. Their identities have not yet been formally released pending notification of their next of kin.

Investigators said the collision occurred near the intersection of Colac-Ballarat Road and Barpinba Road in Weering, an area known for its rural roads and agricultural traffic. Images from the scene showed both vehicles sustaining catastrophic front-end damage, with one of the vehicles coming to rest off the roadway beside a paddock. The force of the impact left debris scattered across the road, prompting authorities to close the area for several hours while specialist collision investigators examined the scene

Victoria Police’s Major Collision Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate exactly what led to the fatal crash. At this stage, officers have not disclosed whether speed, road conditions, weather, mechanical failure, driver impairment, or any other contributing factors played a role in the collision. Investigators are carefully examining physical evidence from the crash site and speaking with potential witnesses as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have been travelling along Colac-Ballarat Road around the time of the crash to come forward. Motorists with dashcam footage that could assist investigators are also urged to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria or provide information directly to police. Authorities believe even seemingly minor details could help establish the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy.

The fatal collision has deeply affected residents across the Ballarat, Beeac, Colac, and wider southwest Victoria communities. News of the sudden deaths has prompted an outpouring of sympathy for the victims’ families as they cope with an unimaginable loss. Local residents have also expressed concern about road safety on regional highways, where high-speed rural intersections can present significant hazards despite generally lower traffic volumes.

The tragedy also serves as another sobering reminder of the ongoing toll of fatal crashes on Victorian roads. Road safety authorities continue to encourage motorists to remain vigilant, avoid distractions, obey speed limits, and exercise additional caution when travelling through rural areas where changing road conditions and limited visibility can increase the risk of serious collisions.

As investigators continue their work, Victoria Police have indicated that a report will be prepared for the Coroner. Additional information may be released as inquiries progress and the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash become clearer. In the meantime, the thoughts of communities throughout southwest Victoria remain with the loved ones of the 57-year-old Redan man and the 70-year-old Beeac woman whose lives were tragically lost in Wednesday’s devastating collision.
