The Illinois community is mourning the tragic death of Dalewayne Turner, a 38-year-old resident of Plainfield, whose remains were recovered from Lake Mattoon following an investigation led by the Illinois State Police. Authorities confirmed Turner’s identity after seeking the public’s assistance in identifying human remains discovered in the lake, bringing answers to a case that had drawn widespread attention across the state.

According to the Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 8, the investigation began on June 28, when boaters discovered part of a human arm floating in Lake Mattoon in Cumberland County. The remains were immediately reported to authorities, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department requested assistance from the Illinois State Police to conduct a comprehensive death investigation.

Investigators released photographs of two distinctive tattoos found on the recovered arm in hopes that members of the public could help identify the victim. One tattoo depicted a skeleton holding a Green Bay Packers football helmet, while the second appeared to show an unidentified letter or number. The images quickly circulated through news outlets and social media, generating numerous tips that ultimately helped investigators identify the victim as Dalewayne Turner of Plainfield, Illinois.

On Wednesday, Illinois State Police officially confirmed that the remains belonged to Turner. Following the identification, investigators announced they were no longer requesting public assistance and stated that there is no known threat to the public. Officials thanked community members for providing information that assisted in identifying the victim and indicated that additional updates would be released as the investigation progresses.
