A major wildfire broke out at Whitmoor Common near Guildford, Surrey, prompting a large-scale emergency response as multiple fire crews worked to contain the rapidly spreading blaze. Thick smoke was seen rising above the heathland, while authorities urged members of the public to stay away from the area to allow firefighters to tackle the incident safely.

According to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, emergency services were called to the fire in the open at approximately 2:15 p.m. Firefighters from several stations across Surrey were immediately mobilized after reports indicated that the blaze was spreading across dry heathland. As the situation escalated, the service confirmed that 12 fire engines and specialist wildfire response teams were deployed to Whitmoor Common near Guildford to prevent the flames from spreading further.

Fire crews worked throughout the afternoon using hose reel jets, beaters, and specialist wildfire equipment to contain the flames. The challenging terrain, combined with dry vegetation and changing wind conditions, made firefighting operations particularly difficult. Authorities established a safety perimeter around the affected area while firefighters concentrated on preventing the fire from reaching nearby woodland and other environmentally sensitive habitats.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service advised residents and visitors to avoid Whitmoor Common and nearby footpaths while emergency operations remained underway. Walkers who were on the common at the time of the incident were evacuated as crews moved quickly to secure the area. Officials also warned that smoke could be visible from surrounding communities and urged motorists to drive with caution if visibility became affected.

Later updates from the fire service confirmed that the wildfire had been brought under control after affecting approximately of heathland. Although the main flames were extinguished, firefighters remained on scene for several hours to dampen down hotspots and monitor the area for any signs of reignition. Wildfires on heathland can continue to smolder beneath the surface, requiring prolonged monitoring even after visible flames have disappeared.

Whitmoor Common is recognized as a protected heathland and forms part of the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area, making incidents such as this particularly concerning for local wildlife and sensitive habitats. The area has experienced several significant wildfires in recent years, including a major blaze in 2018 that burned around 30 acres of land and required firefighters to work through the night to bring the fire under control.

Officials have not yet confirmed what caused the latest wildfire, and inquiries remain ongoing. During periods of warm, dry weather, authorities regularly remind visitors that discarded cigarettes, unattended barbecues, campfires, and other sources of ignition can quickly spark large heathland fires. Even a small flame can spread rapidly across dry grass and gorse under favorable weather conditions.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has thanked the public for avoiding the area while crews carried out their work and continues to encourage residents to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring Whitmoor Common in the coming days as investigations into the cause of the wildfire proceed and efforts begin to assess the environmental impact of the blaze.
