The New Rochelle community is mourning the tragic loss of Joan A. Mosca, a 92-year-old resident whose life ended in a devastating single-vehicle crash along Interstate 684 in Westchester County, New York. Authorities confirmed that Mosca was found deceased inside her overturned vehicle late Tuesday evening after she had earlier been reported missing.

According to the New York State Police, the investigation began on June 30, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m., after family members reported Mosca missing. She had last been seen around 4:00 p.m. leaving the park-and-ride lot near Exit 4 on Interstate 684 in Mount Kisco, where she was observed driving a gray Toyota Camry southbound. Concerned relatives contacted law enforcement when she failed to arrive at her intended destination, prompting an extensive search by state troopers.

Several hours later, at approximately 10:30 p.m., troopers located Mosca’s vehicle approximately 30 feet off the right shoulder of Interstate 684 near mile marker 0.9 in Westchester County. The Toyota Camry had overturned after leaving the roadway. Emergency responders discovered Joan Mosca inside the vehicle, where she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary findings from the New York State Police indicate that Mosca had been traveling southbound when, for reasons that remain unknown, her vehicle drifted off the right side of the highway. Investigators believe the car struck a tree before overturning down an embankment. Officials have not reported evidence of another vehicle being involved, and the exact circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation.

Emergency personnel from Harrison EMS responded to the scene alongside members of the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office, who assisted with the recovery and subsequent investigation. Authorities continue to examine all available evidence, including roadway conditions, vehicle data, and any potential medical factors, to determine what caused the fatal accident. As of now, no additional details have been released regarding contributing circumstances.

The heartbreaking incident has deeply saddened those who knew Joan Mosca in New Rochelle. While officials have released few personal details about her life, news of her passing has prompted an outpouring of sympathy for her family and friends. The loss of a longtime community member under such tragic circumstances has resonated throughout the area, with many extending their condolences as loved ones begin to process the unexpected tragedy.

Fatal crashes involving elderly motorists often underscore the importance of roadway safety and continued awareness of the unique challenges older drivers may face. However, investigators have emphasized that it is too early to speculate about the cause of this collision until the investigation has been completed.

The New York State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or observed Joan Mosca’s vehicle traveling on Interstate 684 before the incident to come forward with information that could assist investigators. Authorities hope that additional witness accounts or available surveillance footage may help clarify the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
