The baseball community is mourning the loss of Kevin O’Malley, a respected baseball executive, investor, and former part-owner of the San Diego Padres, who died at the age of 50 following complications related to sepsis. O’Malley passed away while receiving hospice care in Santa Barbara after a prolonged illness that began during a business trip to New York last fall, according to his father, former Los Angeles Dodgers president Peter O’Malley.

Kevin became ill while traveling for business in New York and later returned to Los Angeles for specialized medical treatment. Despite months of care and the support of his family and medical professionals, his health steadily declined before he entered hospice care in Santa Barbara, where he died peacefully from complications associated with sepsis.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kevin O’Malley was part of one of baseball’s most influential families. He was the son of Peter O’Malley, who served as president of the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1970 to 1998, and the grandson of Walter O’Malley, the Hall of Fame executive remembered for relocating the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, a move that forever changed Major League Baseball. Growing up surrounded by the sport, Kevin developed a lifelong passion for baseball while forging a career that reflected both his family’s legacy and his own entrepreneurial vision.

Kevin attended Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, where he played baseball before continuing his education and athletic career at the University of Pennsylvania. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from the prestigious Wharton School in 2004, preparing him for a successful career that blended business leadership with his love for professional sports.

His professional journey began within the Dodgers organization, where he worked in the late 1990s at the club’s affiliates in Great Falls, Montana, and at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida. He later co-founded Top of the Third Inc., a company that owned and operated several California-based minor league baseball franchises, including the Stockton Mudville Nine and the Visalia Rawhide. Through these organizations, Kevin became known for supporting player development and strengthening baseball at the grassroots level.

In 2012, Kevin joined members of the O’Malley and Seidler families as part of the ownership group that purchased the San Diego Padres. He remained involved with the franchise until the ownership group completed the sale of the club earlier this year. Beyond baseball, Kevin was also the founder and managing partner of Carmelina Capital Partners, a growth equity investment firm established in 2010, demonstrating his talent as both a businessman and entrepreneur.

Peter O’Malley reflected on his son’s lifelong devotion to the game, saying that while baseball meant a great deal to Kevin, “Family came first, but baseball was a close second.” Those words have resonated throughout the baseball community, where colleagues, former players, and friends have remembered Kevin as a thoughtful leader, generous mentor, and humble individual who never sought recognition despite his family’s iconic place in baseball history.

Kevin O’Malley is survived by his wife, Allison, their four children Grace, Brendan, Brooke, and Margaret—as well as his father, Peter O’Malley, his siblings, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Annette O’Malley. His passing marks the loss of a respected executive whose contributions to professional and minor league baseball will be remembered for years to come. Through his leadership, dedication to the sport, and commitment to family, Kevin O’Malley leaves behind a legacy that extends well beyond the baseball diamond. Funeral and memorial service arrangements have not yet been publicly announced by the family.
