A tragic homicide investigation in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood has shaken the family of NFL veteran Calais Campbell after authorities identified 71-year-old Nateal Campbell as the victim. Police have confirmed that her son, Ciarre Campbell, was taken into custody at the scene and has since been charged in connection with her death as investigators continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers responded to a residence on Roswell Road Tuesday afternoon after concerned family members requested a welfare check. Upon arriving at the home, officers encountered a man who had reportedly barricaded himself inside. Police subsequently forced entry into the residence, where they discovered Nateal Campbell unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.

Authorities later identified the man taken into custody as 41-year-old Ciarre Campbell, the brother of Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell. Fulton County Jail records indicate that Ciarre Campbell has been charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. The charges remain allegations, and the case will proceed through the judicial process as investigators continue gathering evidence.

Investigators have described the incident as an apparent domestic matter involving the victim and her son. Police officials also acknowledged that officers had previously responded to the residence in connection with earlier incidents, including reports involving possible mental health concerns and an alleged arson-related call several months ago. Authorities have not stated whether those previous incidents are directly connected to the current investigation, but search warrants have been obtained as detectives continue processing evidence from the home.

The Campbell family released a heartfelt statement expressing profound grief over the loss of their matriarch while requesting privacy during this difficult period.

“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell,” the statement read. The family added that while the details surrounding her death remain under investigation, they take comfort in believing she has been reunited with her late husband, Charles “Chuck” Campbell, and asked the public to respect their privacy as they mourn.

The Baltimore Ravens also extended condolences to Calais Campbell and his family, stating that the organization was deeply saddened by the news and offering its full support during this tragic time. The veteran defensive lineman, widely respected both on and off the field, recently returned to Baltimore and has built a reputation throughout his NFL career for his leadership and extensive charitable work.

Nateal Campbell was well known within the Campbell family’s charitable efforts, helping support the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation, an organization dedicated to mentoring young people and providing educational and life-enrichment opportunities. Friends and supporters have remembered her as a devoted mother whose encouragement played a significant role in the success of her children, including Calais Campbell’s distinguished football career.

The investigation remains active, and officials have not released additional details regarding a motive or the precise circumstances surrounding Nateal Campbell’s death. Authorities say further information will be made available as the case progresses through the criminal justice system.
