Paul Pelosi, the husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge following a traffic incident in Napa County, California, where authorities say he struck a legally parked vehicle before driving away from the scene.

According to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on the afternoon of July 3 in Yountville, a community in the heart of Napa Valley. Deputies were dispatched after a witness reported that a brown convertible had collided with an unoccupied parked vehicle on Yount Street. The witness told investigators that the driver briefly stopped following the collision but then continued driving away without exchanging information or waiting for law enforcement

Authorities later located the damaged convertible approximately a quarter of a mile from the crash site after it became disabled. Investigators identified Paul Pelosi, 86, as the driver of the vehicle. During questioning, Pelosi acknowledged that he realized he had struck something but stated that he did not know what he had hit and continued driving until his vehicle could no longer be operated.

The parked vehicle sustained significant rear-end damage, while Pelosi’s convertible suffered extensive front-end damage. Fortunately, no one was inside the parked car at the time of the collision, and authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the crash. Because the incident involved only property damage, Pelosi was not taken into custody at the scene, which is consistent with California procedures for many misdemeanor traffic offenses.

Investigators also determined that alcohol was not a factor in the collision. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said Pelosi successfully completed a field sobriety evaluation, including a preliminary breath test that registered no alcohol impairment. Officials emphasized that the recommended misdemeanor charge stems solely from the allegation of leaving the scene of a property-damage collision without fulfilling the legal reporting requirements.

The Sheriff’s Office has referred the case to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, which will review the evidence and determine whether to formally file misdemeanor charges. Additionally, because of Pelosi’s age, authorities said they will submit a driver re-evaluation request to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, a routine administrative step available to law enforcement when concerns arise regarding an elderly driver’s continued ability to operate a vehicle safely.

A spokesperson for the Pelosi family said Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the damaged vehicle and has committed to paying for the repairs. The spokesperson added that the family considers the matter private and declined to provide further comment while the case remains under review.

The latest incident comes several years after Pelosi’s widely publicized 2022 DUI conviction in Napa County, for which he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence causing injury. He was sentenced to probation, a short jail term, fines, restitution, and participation in a court-ordered DUI education program.

The Napa County District Attorney has not announced when a final charging decision will be made. Until then, the investigation remains open, and officials say any prosecution will be based on the evidence gathered during the Sheriff’s Office investigation.
