Authorities in Dothan, Alabama, are actively investigating a reported shooting incident at Wiregrass Commons Mall, prompting a large law enforcement response and temporary lockdown procedures as officers worked to secure the area and assist those inside.

According to official statements released by the Dothan Police Department following the incident, emergency calls were received reporting active gunfire inside the mall during the afternoon hours. Officers and emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene, where initial reports indicated that at least one individual had been injured by gunfire. The mall area near major retail sections, including the vicinity of the Spirit Halloween store, was among the first areas secured by responding units.

As officers arrived, witnesses reported hearing multiple shots, prompting immediate shelter-in-place instructions for shoppers and employees across the mall. Law enforcement teams conducted systematic sweeps of the building to ensure no additional suspects remained inside and to safely evacuate civilians who had taken cover inside stores. Police confirmed that all areas of the mall were eventually cleared and that there was no ongoing active shooter threat after the initial response.

One male victim was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment following the shooting. Early reports indicated that the victim suffered at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. His condition was initially undisclosed, though authorities confirmed he was alive when transported for medical care.

Investigators later determined that the shooting stemmed from a confrontation involving multiple individuals inside a business within the mall, specifically a barber shop. According to police accounts, an altercation escalated when a group entered the establishment and tensions led to the exchange of gunfire between at least two armed individuals. Authorities stated that one of the individuals receiving a haircut was also armed and returned fire during the confrontation.

Following the incident, police identified multiple individuals believed to be involved. One suspect was injured during the exchange and another fled the scene, later becoming the subject of a manhunt and criminal charges including attempted murder and firing into an occupied building. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the investigation remained active as detectives continued to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

Officials also noted that several shoppers and employees were inside the mall at the time of the shooting, many of whom sheltered in place in stores until police completed multiple sweeps of the building. Authorities praised the cooperation of civilians and mall staff, stating that coordinated responses helped prevent further injuries during the chaotic situation.

In a follow-up statement, police stressed that the shooting appeared to be an isolated confrontation between individuals rather than a random attack on shoppers. They reassured the public that there was no continuing threat to the community once the scene was secured, though the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full sequence of events and any additional persons involved.

Wiregrass Commons Mall was temporarily closed during the investigation, and law enforcement agencies indicated that updates would be released as new information becomes available.
