A deadly shooting at Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, Michigan, on Friday, July 3, 2026, prompted a massive law enforcement response, left two people dead, one person injured, and temporarily forced the closure of one of Metro Detroit’s busiest shopping malls. Authorities have confirmed the incident is under active investigation and are continuing to search for those responsible.

According to the Dearborn Police Department, officers were dispatched to Fairlane Town Center, located near Michigan Avenue and Evergreen Road, at approximately 1:25 p.m. following reports of multiple gunshots inside the mall. Initial reports of a possible active shooter spread rapidly on social media as frightened shoppers and employees fled the building. Police quickly secured the area and urged the public to stay away while officers assessed the situation.

As the investigation unfolded, police confirmed that three people had been shot during the incident. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second victim later died after being transported to a nearby hospital. A third victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized. Officials said the victims are believed to be in their late teens to early twenties, though their identities have not yet been publicly released pending notification of their families.

During an afternoon press briefing, Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin stated that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Investigators believe the gunfire erupted after a confrontation between two groups who knew each other escalated into a physical fight and then into an exchange of gunfire. Authorities indicated that multiple individuals involved in the altercation may have been armed.

Officials emphasized that, despite early reports describing the incident as an “active shooter” situation, there is no continuing threat to the public. Police have detained and questioned several individuals believed to have information about the shooting, though no formal arrests had been announced at the time of the latest update. The investigation remains active as detectives review surveillance footage, collect forensic evidence, and interview witnesses.

The chaos inside the shopping center also resulted in an additional injury. Police reported that one person attempting to flee the mall during the panic was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot. That individual’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Witnesses described scenes of confusion and fear as multiple gunshots echoed through the mall. Shoppers abandoned their purchases and ran toward exits while store employees quickly locked doors and sheltered customers. Videos shared online showed people screaming and rushing to safety as police officers flooded the property. One witness told local media that he heard four to five gunshots before seeing crowds running from the area.

The shooting also prompted temporary lockdowns at nearby facilities, including Henry Ford Medical Center–Fairlane, as a precaution while officers worked to secure the surrounding area. Fairlane Town Center remained closed for several hours as investigators processed the crime scene.

Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud urged residents to avoid the area during the investigation and expressed condolences to the victims and their families. Police Chief Shahin condemned the violence, noting that Fairlane Town Center is generally considered a safe destination for shoppers and that investigators are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.

As detectives continue piecing together the events that led to the deadly confrontation, authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or possesses photos or videos from inside the mall to contact the Dearborn Police Department. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
